Altrusa Club of Oak Ridge Awards Scholarships to Area Women

At  our May 24, 2017, meeting we awarded $12,500 in scholarships to 14 deserving recipients.

The scholarship program began in memory of Sarah Ketron who served as Club president in 1973-74. The scholarships bearing her name are awarded to female non-traditional students who have interrupted their studies for work or family obligations and are beginning or returning to school to complete their education. This year four Sarah Ketron scholarships were awarded. Two will be used at King University and two at Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology (TCAT).

Ten girls who were completing their high school education also received scholarships. Two will be attending Roane State Community College which matches one of our scholarships. The others are entering four-year institutions. Fifteen members served on the Scholarship Committee. The process begins in late January. This year we received 36 applications.

The scholarship program is funded through the Foundation’s annual spaghetti dinner and community support at the Club’s annual auction. This year we were saddened at the loss of another of our long-time members. Memorials were made to the Foundation in her honor and two scholarships were designated as Jean Stone Memorial Scholarships.
